NPO Diet
The Super Secret NPO diet.
If you have ever been in a hospital the night before surgery you probably noticed a sign on your bed that read “NPO.” It stands for “Nil Per Os” which is Latin for “Nothing Through The Mouth” or more commonly “Nothing By Mouth.”
What a way to loose weight – just stop shoving stuff in your pie hole and Walhalla you fall away to nothing.
But that’s not going to work, for obvious reasons. The real reason for the NPO on your bed rail is to keep you from eating after a certain hour the night before surgery. They need your stomach empty before they stick a fork or scalpel in you.
One of the best kept secrets of losing weight is a simple combination of meal timing and daily fasting. Six very small meals spread out over the course of a day and a nightly NPO will drop your weight and burn fat faster than a starvation diet, here’s why:
When you reduce your caloric intake your body simply burns less energy to compensate. After just a few days your body will reset its caloric furnace to burn less fuel than it did before.
Where your weight was stable at 2,500 to 3,000 calories per day before the diet, you are now able to sustain the same stable weight at 1,800 to 2,000 calories a day. You can lose weight on a low caloric diet but it will take years rather than months to do it.
If you eat small amounts of food at six evenly spaced meals between the time you wake, and say 6:00 pm or so, and then do the NPO until breakfast you will lose weight in your sleep. Your body will still feel hunger pangs, but you won’t, because you will sleep right through them.
What you eat and when you eat are also extremely important. Carbohydrates are the easiest foods to convert to fuel for your body’s energy furnace. Your body will burn off carbohydrates first then turn to fats and lastly to proteins.
If, you eat normal amounts of carbohydrates before say 10:00 am, and then eat small limited carbohydrate meals for the rest of the day, you will have more energy through out the day and your body will not have a ready source of carbohydrate fuel at night.
With no carbos to burn, your body will be forced to convert the next easiest source of fuel, stored fat, to get you through your nightly ‘NPO’ fast.
